I’m finally catching up on some recent action films that we haven’t discussed yet, now that my work schedule has settled down. The first one on my list is Gunner, directed by Dimitri Logothetis (Jiu-Jitsu) and featuring Luke Hemsworth as Gunner, a war veteran who returns to his hometown only to find it has changed drastically. While camping with his sons, they accidentally discover a drug lab, leading to a tense situation where his two sons are kidnapped. It’s up to Gunner to take matters into his own hands and rescue them.

I had heard a lot of positive reviews about this film, so perhaps my expectations were set a bit too high. I was looking for more thrilling action. Like many low-budget films these days, it relies on CG gunfire, and while there are a few real explosions, some of them are animated. The parachuting scenes also lack realism.

The most disappointing aspect, however, is the music choice. In nearly every action sequence, a song plays instead of a score or silence. While this can work in some films, like Guardians of the Galaxy, here it diminishes the sense of danger and urgency, making it hard to believe that Gunner or his children are truly at risk.

Luke Hemsworth fits the role perfectly and shows promise as a new action star, while it's great to see Mykel Shannon Jenkins from Undisputed 3 taking on the role of the main antagonist, Dobbs. Morgan Freeman also makes an appearance, adding a touch of class to the film.

Gunner often feels reminiscent of classic 80s action films. While it may not break new ground in the genre, it successfully delivers a straightforward and entertaining experience. The pacing could have been improved, as I believe the story could have been wrapped up in about 90 minutes, but that's just a minor critique.

The fight scenes are quite enjoyable, and it's refreshing to see an action film like this still being produced. With a larger budget and different music choices, it could have reached even greater heights.

In summary, Gunner is a mostly fun nod to vintage action films, though the music and some unconvincing CGI hold it back. Luke Hemsworth shows potential as a new action hero, and both Mykel Shannon Jenkins and Morgan Freeman work hard to enhance the film.
